Volcanoes
Audrey is one to jump into something and really learn about it. When she gets her mind on something we get books from the library, look at images online, possibly watch movies about it, whatever we get our hands on to learn more, she wants it. I'm seeing more and more of Albert in her. For a while it was anything about butterflies and caterpillars. Recently, it has been volcanoes, which she used to call "potanoes" (it took us a long time to realize she wasn't saying potatoes).I'm not sure if it was Dora or Diego that first introduced a volcano to her. She would mention them every once in awhile, usually when making up an "adventure" that had all kinds of obstacles, including climbing a volcano, "...but be careful of the hot lava". She had no idea what a volcano really was, so we began to talk about them further.
My Mom had gone to Mexico and saw "Popo", so much of her discussion with Grammy was about that particular volcano. They began looking at images of Popo online, and talking about hot lava. With my Mom's creative touch, and having taught 2nd grade, she knew how to make a volcano. She took Audrey for a day, and began the wonderful adventure of making Audrey's VERY OWN volcano. She got her hands wet, built the volcano, waited for it to dry, then painted it grey (because that's the color of Popo). When that dried she painted the "toasty, hot lava".
Once the volcano (aka Popo) was looking just right, an added touch of baking soda and vinegar, made the creation complete. She is very proud of her creation, and I am very proud of my little sponge. She amazes me with her knowledge, and thirst for learning more. I love being able to teach her new things, and seeing her excitement as she learns.
We're onto Planets next (thanks Little Einstein). I have a lot to learn...
